This week I bring to you a post by Michael who provides his opinion why getting that big promotion to senior management level may not be the best move.

Many points in this post resonated with me because I see, experience or hear about them in Policing.  It is a pattern which replicates itself in any organisation where there is a hierarchy.

For me, just like financial independence, answering the why and what then will help to determine if senior management is for you.  Nailing these two questions can also assist when preparing for any interview because it can make you come across more confident.

As with many things in life, there are trade-offs to be had.  For many senior management level positions, the sacrifice is family time.  Even if the amount of family time remains the same, the quality of time would be diminished because your mind is at work.

Bigger pay = more responsibilities and greater expectations.

After a certain point, our time is worth increasingly more than any amount of extra money we earn.  It’s up to us to determine where that point is.

Unfortunately for some, they only discover this point once it is too late and their broken relationship is beyond repair.

We’ve all known someone or have heard about somebody who was so career driven.  Their career was number one.

If done intentionally, good for them to be clear on what they want in life and set out to achieve it.  However, most of the time, all I hear are regrets and how they didn’t see they were drifting apart from their partners.

Of course.  This isn’t a binary decision: career vs. family.  There are people in senior management positions who have long lasting and fulfilling family lives.  It is worth being aware of some of the pitfalls and have a strategy to avoid them.

One of the main levers you can pull to achieve financial freedom is the amount of money you earn.

For most people, earning more money requires getting a promotion at work. Maybe even getting multiple promotions over a career span.

Most promotions usually move you up a level in an organization or increase your compensation. They’ll generally require you to take on more responsibility, pick-up additional projects, or even supervise some co-workers.

In a traditional company, however, there is a specific type of promotion which takes you into a whole different realm of responsibility. It’s where the rules of the game change, and where your preconceived ideas of what you thought you wanted are get tested.

I’m talking about getting promoted to a senior level within an organization. Typically the goal of many ambitious individuals looking to climb the infamous corporate ladder.
